Fundraising Skate Jam for Free Movement Skateboarding
Share
If you haven't yet heard of Free Movement Skateboarding, they are a charity group consisting of Will, Ruby & Benji. Three skateboarders on a mission to use skateboarding to empower the 25,000 young refugees currently in Athens. Their project has recently dedicated its time towards organising six fund-raising skate jams starting in Norwich and ending in Brighton, with the guys cycling the distances inbetween. Each of these jams were a great success, raising-funds and gathering donations in the form of used boards and equipment which have now gone off with the guys to be distributed to the Refugees of Athens. Supported by the charity Help Refugees, FMS will promote dignity and quality of life for these refugees. Skateboarding builds self-esteem, relieves stress and is great exercise. The project is still looking for donations, so please give what you can to this amazing cause.
At Lariatt we were totally stoked to be asked to help out with the third leg of FMS's cycle tour in St. Albans. We put out a call to all our locals to dig out your old/spare boards and bring them down to The Pioneer Club Skatepark. The Pioneer Club is the U.K's oldest skatepark, and one which certainly shares the charitable ethos of the project making it the perfect venue.
The event had a really great turnout and the skateboarders of St. Albans and the surrounding areas were incredibly generous, so thank you to all those who came down and donated. We had photographic and artistic exhibitions, Tony Hawks Pro Skater 2 (genesis) fired up on the playstation, and tea & coffee to prepare our locals for a night of shredding, competitions, prizes, mongo push relay racing, and general good times. We were even lucky enough to pry Rohum Pourtamahsbi away from his editing suite to document the night, and get a quick few words from the people making all this happen.
